When it comes to feminine hygiene, one of the most common treatments that women undergo at least once a month is a nail treatment. While going to a nail salon is one of the most relaxing activities for any female, the changing landscape of manicures have certainly given some women pause as far as which treatment they wanna opt for.
One of the most popular nail treatments as of yet is a gel nail manicure. The downside, however, is that if you go to a salon, you can easily rack up the bills as this treatment does not come with a light price tag. The good news, however, is that innovation and creativity have reached a point where you can actually do your own gel nails at home.
Not only will you be able to save a pretty penny, but you will get to customize your nails just the way you want. Let’s get started!
promise a staying power of 2 to 4 weeks. However, for most people, the thought of doing their own gel nails manicure sounds intimidating. The fact of the matter is that, you can do your own gel manicure. This is super easy and this guide will provide you with clear instructions and tips to achieve this. We also have a great guide on how to pain your nails perfectly
But before we learn how to do gel nails, lets first clear the wide spread misconception that gel manicures are not safe.
This argument stems from the fact that we use UV- light to aid the hardening of the gel nail polish. However,a recent scientific study from December 2012 which was even published in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology concluded that UV-nail lamps would be safe to use for over 250 years of weekly manicures, and even then there would be a low risk of skin cancer. So it is Ok to have your gel manicure as often you want. The only advise I would give is that after every manicure, you give your nails enough time to recuperate, and you may as well apply a moisturizer.

How to- Gel nail tutorial-step by step
1. Clean your nails:
It is important that you start with clean nails. It is not good to apply the polish on un-cleaned nails. Cleaning your nails will involve removing any old nail polish.Use a nail cleanser to clean your nails and decontaminate them so that the gel will stick better. the If you apply new polish non-cleaned nails, you end up with a bumpy manicure, which will look less attractive on your nails. You can use a nylon brush for dusting your nails. Trim your nails to your desired length using a nail clipper and file them to your desired shape.
2. Work on your cuticles.
For this step, you will need cuticle remover and cuticle pushers (metalic or wooden cuticle pushers). You may also need warm water if you have tough cuticles. Soaking the cuticles in warm water for 2 minutes will help soften them. After softening them, apply the cuticle remover and then push back each cuticle using the cuticle pusher. To increase the adhesion of gel nail polish, it is also necessary to buff your nails after working on the cuticles.Use a good nail buffer to buff the nail surface and make it shiny and butter smooth. 3. Apply the gel nail polish.
There are different brands of gel nail polish you can chose from for a perfect gel manicure. The choice will depend on your taste, mood and occasion.
Application of polish will be in three steps.
Step 1: Apply the gel base coat:
Roll the polish bottle between the thumbs of both hand to blend, Without getting the polish all over your cuticles or fingers, apply the base coat to your nails. Then immediately put your hands under the UV/LED lamp for the time indicated on the polish bottle to cure. For Some brands, the curing time will be 1 minute while others require more time.
Step 2: Apply the gel color coat.
We recommend that you apply this in more than one thin layers, one layer at a time. I usually do two layers as this gives a more bold color.Chose a gel polish color of your choice and evenly apply it over the nails. You can use the three stripe rule for perfect application. After applying the first layer, place the nails under UV-lamp to allow the gel polish to cure for the prescribed time (typically 90 seconds-2 minutes). Then layer on and cure the second coat to make the color bolder.
Step 3: Apply a gel top coat.
I cannot over emphasize the importance of applying top coat. A topcoat, is key to making a long lasting manicure when properly applied to the nail polish, it can last a little longer compared to when you do not apply top coat. This is because it prevents the color from chipping.Apply a thin and even layer, then cure for the prescribed time limit.
4. Swipe your nails with the 99% Isopropyl alcohol
You may omit this step, but instead your nails will be sticky and tacky. Pour a little 99% Isopropyl alcohol onto cotton pads and swipe them over the polished nails. This will make your nails dry, hard, smooth and shinny.
5. Go show off your adorable nails: Congratulations. You now have nice looking and adorable gel nails which look salon made. So go and show them off.
