How to file your nails: Tips for Fingernails!

The most basic, and simplest, way to file your nails is to take the emery board and hold it between your thumb and index finger lightly. Then move the emery board in one fluid motion from side to center – try to avoid doing a sawing motion (moving back and forth) when filing your nails. By filing your nails in one fluid motion you avoid as many ragged tips and it prevents you from hurting/ruining your nail bed.

You can also shape your fingernails using an emery board and these tips:

For a round shape: easiest shape to make and the most natural.

Best for: thin and weak nails

  1. File your nail down to the length that you want, using the technique described above.
  2. File under both sides of nail to straighten it out. The best way to do is this to keep the file towards the free edge – line the emery board edge so that it matches up (and goes a little under) with your nail. If you see that the end of your nail, right above where your finger skin is, is straight then you’re good to move on to step 3. If it looks like it’s still point down you need to file more, if it is pointed upwards you filed too much.
  3. File the edges of your nails to round them out.
For a square shape: straight free edge and smooth round corners.
  3. File both corners just to get rid of the edge, but don’t do too much because then you’ll lose the square shape.
For an oval shape: egg like shape to make your nails look more elegant and feminine.
  1. You’ll want to file from the very corners, where your nail imbeds into your skin. Just file enough to make the edges of your nails smaller/round looking.
  2. File down the center of your nail, where it is longer, enough to smooth it out and make it rounder. Again, use the technique that is described above to prevent damage to your nails.

How to file your nails: Tips for Toes!

  1. Gently hold the emery board between your thumb and index finger. Keep the board at 90 degrees when you’re filing your toenails.
  2. File in one direction on the free edge of your toenail. Try to avoid filing in a saw-like motion and also from filing under the free edge because it can lead to ingrown toenails!
  3. Keep filing until you get just a little bit of free edge left. What I mean by this is keep filing until you see that your free edge is lined up with the skin of your toe.
  4. Remove the filing dust.

These are just simple tips that will make filing your fingernails and toenails so much easier! I know because I use these tips and techniques every time I want to paint my nails, I mean, these tips are so simple to do to achieve such a salon worthy outcome!
