Vector Graphics: Transforming Sketches Into Vector Art

Consider yourself an artist? Have a talent for drawing or inking? These skills can actually transfer over to graphic design extremely fluently. If you have a lot of drawings already lying around doing nothing, there are a variety of ways to digitize these images for the web or even put them in a digital form that allows you to blow them up into massive prints (this is essentially what vector graphics do best).

What Are Vector Graphics

For those of you new to all of this, vector graphics are different from raster graphics (jpeg, bitmap, etc.) because, rather than representing an image as an array of pixels, vector graphics use geometrical primitives such as points, lines, and curves to represent images. This means that vector graphics don’t suffer from pixelation when blown up like raster graphics. This makes them extremely versatile, allowing you to use a sketch in multiple projects demanding multiple files and print sizes.

From Sketch to Vector

There are a variety of ways to turn your sketches into vector graphics: Using live trace to create the vector lines, creating your own vector points on top of your sketch (using the sketch as a reference) with the pen tool, and creating your own vector points on top of your sketch using a tablet. Each one of them has its own benefits and shortcomings; unfortunately, it would take a whole series of posts to cover them all. For today, I will cover live trace since it is the simplest method and perfect for beginners to vector graphics.

To tell live trace vector graphics apart from free-hand vector graphics (made with either then pen tool or a tablet), most live trace vector graphics have more lines and are a bit “busier.” Free-hand vector graphics generally have fewer lines and look a bit “cleaner,” like the image pictured below:

Live Trace

A few years ago, any graphic artist would tell you to simply never use the “live trace” function in Adobe Illustrator. However, the live trace feature has gradually improved throughout the various iterations of Illustrator. Now that we’re in Adobe Illustrator CS5, there’s a lot that can be done in the live trace. In fact, the live trace has become so popularly used that some free-hand vector artists are starting to complain (it can take hours or even days to ink a vector graphic while live trace takes five minutes tops).

Still, in order to make a vector graphic actually look good and interesting, a lot of work still goes into prepping an image before using live trace. In fact, a lot of work generally goes into the original sketch if it is to be vectored using live trace.

General rules for sketches before live trace:

  • Use tight, defined lines – Too many loose or stray lines will be interpreted by live trace and make your vector image look cluttered. In general, I avoid shading unless going for an unusual effect.
  • Trace over your sketch in pen – This is kind of an extension of the rule above. You can do this using a new sheet of paper over the original sketch or you can just ink over the original sketch and erase.
  • Less lines are (usually) better than more – This is a general rule and doesn’t need to be followed blindly, but I find that it’s a lot easier to add more vector lines after live tracing using the pen tool.
  • Experiment – Don’t follow the above rules blindly! You may find that your style works well with whatever weird glitch effect live trace has on some of your sketches.

Cleaning the scanned image before live trace:

  • Scan image at 300 dpi (dots per inch) – This is a great resolution for printing; if you don’t need this high a resolution, you can always scale it down later.
  • Open in Photoshop:
    • Grayscale the image – (Image->Mode->Grayscale)
    • Increase contrast – (Image->Adjest->Brightness/Contrast->Levels (or Curves)
    • Use the Eraser Tool (E) to clean up white areas of the image (extremely important)

Using live trace

In general, I find it best to just fiddle with the live trace settings while monitoring a preview of your image to see if you’re getting your desired results. Here’s a helpful PDF from Adobe created for the first Illustrator to use live trace (CS2), but I still find it very helpful for the current version of live trace. This guide from smashingmagazine is also equally invaluable.

Personally, when I’m working with live trace, I’ll try to modify the original scanned image in several different ways (blurring edges and lines, sharpening others, erasing more white areas) and see how these modifications affect the image once in live trace. Generally, I’ll have 5 or more live trace versions of roughly the same image with different modifications.

Those who are against watermarking say watermarking is not a full-proof way of preventing image theft. They further argue that watermarking is a distraction at the best. Is it so? Are there no good ways to watermark your photos in a visually pleasing way? This tutorial is an attempt to find exactly that.

Technically, watermarking is not a very complex process. It needs software similar to the one you’d need for the more difficult photo editing and post-processing. In this tutorial, we’ll use Photoshop but there is a lot of other similar software. There are even some online services so you can easily find the best one for you.

There are many contradictory opinions about what is the best method to watermark your photos. Some people want it to be as obvious as possible. This is to discourage potential image thieves. A well-placed watermark becomes too much work to remove and that is what discourages potential image thieves from trying to steal your photos. However, there are others who believe that a watermark will ruin an image just by its presence. This is what I personally believe.



The general consensus for people who support the placement of watermarks in photos is that they should be placed at a corner, be it the upper or lower part of the image. No matter what, you shouldn’t watermark your photos right in the middle or anywhere near the middle of the image. This, though, is a good way to desist image thieves. However, it is going to be a turn off for people who will see your images – your clients and the general photography community.

And keep in mind that if you are going to retouch your photos you’ll have to place a watermark after you are done with all other editings.


Any font is suitable as long as you can easily and legibly read the content. If it is a logo that you want to watermark your photos with you will probably need a stylized font. However, if it is a simple piece of text such as ‘Adam Zampa Photography’, then it is highly recommended that you use a legible font. It is my personal opinion that anything that has cursive writing may look great as a watermark but would be difficult to read.

You should try to find a font style that is relevant to your photo style. For example, if you are editing wedding photos the font style should be elegant and calm.

Remember, your watermark isn’t just a way to dissuade image thieves. When you choose to watermark your photos you also leave a way for your potential clients to know who took the image and therefore give them an option to contact you. The simpler that information is the better it is for your business. Sure you can use a stylized version of your business name but no one is going to hire you for that stylized font!

What is more important than a stylized logo is integrating your website URL. I have seen far too many gorgeous stylized watermarks where the photographer has put in a lot of time designing the logo but has missed putting in a breadcrumb for a client to follow.



The color of your watermark should be something that does not hog the attention of the viewer away from the image. The watermark should be there in the image, but it shouldn’t appear too obvious. I’d personally prefer a white color if the image isn’t too bright. Play around with the opacity to make the watermark blend in.

If the image has darker colors I prefer gray or even black depending on the dominating colors in the image. Gray is more of a color for all seasons for me as it blends well with both white, black, and other colors. With the custom brush preset option that I have discussed below, it is possible to convert your watermark to any color, change the blending mode as well as change the flow to adapt it to any background.

Drag and drop a logo layer

A simple method to watermark your photos is to open a separate image that contains your logo. Drag and drop that image as a layer onto the image you want to add the watermark to. If the logo is on a solid background it would look weird, so the right approach would be to change the blend mode to Screen. That way any solid color will go away and the outline will remain. But before you change the blend to mode screen make sure that you use an Invert adjustment layer on the logo layer.

Options – Custom Brush Preset


The custom brush preset is a very easy and surprisingly effective way to watermark your photos. It gives you a lot of options to edit your watermark. If your watermark is a simple logo, your business name, or even a stylized version of your name, convert that into a black on white image (black-filled logo / name against a white background).

Open the image in Photoshop. Open Edit > Define Brush Preset > (Enter a Brush Name) > Press OK. Switch to the brush tool and simply click to print the watermark on your image. Voila! You now have a custom watermark that gets placed on the photos just by a click of the brush. You can switch to any color while on the brush tool and the watermark will assume that color ideally, however, black, gray, or white are the preferred colors to watermark your photos.

The beauty of this method is that this is a brush preset and that means you can change the size of the brush, essentially making the watermark smaller or larger, change the color and or move it around by placing it on a separate layer. Plus, with blending modes you can literally choose whatever way your watermark shows up in your image.
